Description

[BT]-5 appeared in 1933. It was high-speed, it had the high specific power (ratio of the power of engine to the mass of tank) and a good armament, which consisted of 45- mm of gun with the high initial velocity of projectile and coupled with it machine gun [DT]. [BT]-5, equipped with aircraft engine, could at the high speed move through the locality on its comparatively wide caterpillars, and this ability repeatedly demonstrated on the prewar maneuvers. The Kharkov engine-building plant [im]. of comintern built [BT] thousand.

The baptism of fire these machines obtained during the Civil War in Spain. They easily resisted Pz. The I and to tanks with 20- mm by the guns of German and Italian production. Then they were used for the reflection of the attack of the Japanese in the Mongolia, where also successfully they battled against the Japanese tanks. In 1941 [BT]-5 successfully resisted tanks Pz. The I, Pz. THE II and Pz. THE III. They reached the greatest successes with the attack from the ambushes during the battle for Moscow.

Some machines continued service up to until 1944, for example, under [Lenigradom] and in Karelia.

On the base of tank [BT]-5 was built the large number of ex-changepulley block machines. Bridge layers, tanks of underwater motion, amphibious tanks, tele-tanks (radio-controlled tanks), chemical tanks and so forth tank [BT]-5 served as basis for creating the tanks [BT]-7.
